Which is the only country to have been investigated by the UN Disabilities Committee?
The UK. The UN’s Report on disabled people’s rights was very critical of the Government’s approach finding that it’s policies had led to ‘grave and systematic’ violations. It said that disabled people’s rights in social security, education, housing, work, health and transport were not being protected and this was a ‘human catastrophe’.
Charities and campaigners commented that the UN Report was a grim reality check for ministers. Despite all the criticism the Tory Government rejected all the UN’s recommendations.
The Labour Party said the damning report showed how disabled people were being failed and having to bear the brunt of Tory austerity policies.
