‘There is no one more keen than me to see this project come into effect, and you have my word I will not rest until the A1 dualling scheme gets fully underway.’ These are the words of Anne-Marie Trevelyan, our MP for the Berwick upon Tweed constituency.

You’ll find them posted on her website on Wednesday, 8 June 2022. They were penned in response to a decision to delay the formal go-ahead for the main groundworks of the A1 dualling scheme until December 2022. This is only for the A1 much-delayed Morpeth to Ellingham extension and does not mention  plans to dual the rest of the A1 to the Scottish border.

On the same site, she writes, ‘the official planning go-ahead for the main works is taken by the Secretary of State in what is known as a “quasi-judicial” capacity, meaning I was not able to speak to him about the decision prior to him making it.  Having spoken to him on Monday, I know he appreciates the importance of this scheme not only to our part of Northumberland but to the wider north east (sic).

We have been waiting decades for A1 investment.

There is good news for us in the midst of all this Tory procrastination. Anne-Marie can NOW speak directly to the Secretary of State for Transport because she IS THE Secretary of State for Transport.

She no longer has any excuse for NOT looking after the interests of her constituents, who are treated as second class citizens compared to people living elsewhere in the UK.

Waiting for a sign that the A1 dual work start soon
Waiting for a sign that the A1 dual work start soon

Sadly her track record is not very impressive when she is meant to be fighting our corner. According to the TheyWorkForYou website, Trevelyn has:

  • Generally voted for reducing central government funding of local government
  • Generally voted against a more proportional system for electing MPs
  • Consistently voted against measures to prevent climate change
  • Generally voted against laws to promote equality and human rights
  • Consistently voted against a publicly owned railway system
  • Voted against greater public control of bus services

In terms of the buses and railways, she simply does not understand how residents struggling with costly, unreliable transport services.

Newcastle could be one hour or three away by car - depending upon the traffic.
Newcastle could be one hour or three away by car - depending upon the traffic.

As our local MP, we would expect her to be screaming from the rooftops for more investment in our town and rural communities. After all, according to the Analysis of Residential Skills Set (ONS, 2011, Berwick upon Tweed Economic Plan, 2017), 18.7% of residents have no qualifications compared to 15% in England, while 66.7% are in full time employment compared to 70.7% in the rest of the country. Part time employment sees us at 33.3% compared to 29.3%nationally.

Drill down and the figures become even more startling about the lack of opportunities and investment in the constituency. But what we can do about it if Anne-Marie is going to continue to ignore us? As your constituency Labour Party, we pledge to challenge Anne-Marie every step of the way and hold her to account at the next General Election(whenever that might be).

If you have concerns about anything to do with constituency and you don’t get any joy from Anne-Marie and her team, get in touch with us. We will always listen to you and give whatever help and guidance we can. We believe, unlike the narrow-minded, self-interest of the Conservative party, in fairness and equality for all.

Without proper A1 dualling, Berwick is cut off from the rest of the country.
